June 2018 - The NSW Branch recently contacted a random selection of members asking for volunteers to assist at functions and workshops. If you were not contacted, you can still offer assistance by contacting Peg Hibbert at her number above. We hope that most apnea sufferers are ignoring the generic mouth guards and chin straps currently being advertised as a "cure". Unfortunately some people see this as an easy fix, only to be disappointed with a poor outcome. Please discuss options with your doctor.
March 2018 - We need to keep up the conversation that sleep apnea is a serious condition and snoring is not a joke. Telling people that they need to seek medical advice for symptoms of sleep disorders remains a challenge. NSW committee members are always keen to provide talks to groups and organisations about sleep disorders. Please feel free to contact us via the Contact Tab on the menu bar.
December 2017 - The Branch AGM was held on 3 October but was not well attended. Due to a lack of interest from new people, the previous committee members were unanimously re-elected. Les Dyball and Peg Hibbert continue to give talks to various community groups, and Sandi looks after the finances and the membership database. Les Louttit still oversees the SDA News and is a wealth of information when we get complicated enquiries.
October 2017 - We were invited by CPAP Sales to share a stand for 5 days in the Riverside Shopping Centre at Windsor. It was a successful venture with people of all ages showing an interest the the machines and in our Fact Sheets. It was interesting to see the number of women enquiring on behalf of their husbands. Most reported the reluctance of their partner to seek assistance.
Another noticeable factor was the number of people who said they had been diagnosed, but were unable to afford a CPAP machine. The cost remains prohibitive to many, and we should continue to lobby health funds and the government to make the equipment affordable to those who are struggling financially.
August 2017 - It has been proposed that the NSW Branch of SDA hold a Christmas Party for its members on Sunday 3 December at a suitable picnic venue (to be advised). BYO plates, utensils and drinks (NO alcohol by Council law). The event will be a sausage sizzle, with basic food supplied, but please being and salads or extras you would like to contribute.
The country tour is still proceeding, but organising suitable venues is still a problem.
June 2017 - The committee was saddened to hear of the passing of Laurie Cree, former NSW Branch president, and driving force behind the formation of the national body in 1996. Our condolences to his widow, Heloise, who remains a Life Member of SDA.
The NSW Branch is still working on talk sessions for rural areas later in the year, although the task of finding willing venues to host the talks is proving harder than we thought. If you have a local club that might be willing to host and promote an SDA talk, please let us know.
April 2017 - The NSW Branch is suffering from a lack of people willing to come forward and serve on the committee. While it involves some commitment, you can arrange the level that you are comfortable with. As the committee is now down to only 5 members, we desperately need more input, ideas and assistance in making things happen.
There are many and varied tasks that do not necessarily require being on the committee. For example, there is a need for a person to contact suppliers each six months about advertising in our Information Booklet, or to liaise with the editor and printer each two months to organise printing and delivery of newsletters, or to join the table for afternoon tea and envelope stuffing.
If you are prepared to give a bit of your time, and particularly your experience, please contact one of the current committee members listed above.
